Sharing and testing design ideas

For many years we worked with this innovative medical device company to develop an identity, booklets, manuals and interfaces for technical users and patients. The LVAD heart pump was designed with an ingenious magnetic rotating impeller to help the heart pump blood around the system.

What we did

Janice Leong and Mary Montague worked with product designers, engineers and clinicians to develop a clear and useful screen interface for medical staff to view on a computer monitor. We also helped design the interface of the small screen on the system controller used by the patient and carer.

Introducing user-centred design, rapid prototyping and user testing techniques to the team helped share and test ideas. In particular, the engineering team gained a better appreciation of the user by visiting the hospital environment and testing the product.

Results

Early feedback about the information and instructions was positive from technical and medical teams. However, the process for medical trialling is long and expensive and the company has not been able to continue product development.
